These Foods Can Damage Your Smile

Did you know that what you eat and drink plays one of the biggest roles in determining your oral health? Although there are many wonderful treatments to help protect your teeth, including bi-annual professional cleanings, brushing twice daily, and flossing daily, nothing beats cutting off the harmful ingredients at the source and improving your diet.

Foods with high acidity should be avoided if at all possible. This includes sour snacks, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and sugary drinks. The acids in foods and drinks can cause dental erosion and weaken your tooth enamel. Over time, this can cause cavities to form.

You should also avoid products that can crack or chip your teeth, or linger around your mouth long after you have eaten them. Hard candies, corn on the cob, and candy apples all could result in oral accidents with a single bite due to their tough exteriors, so use discretion at all times. Other foods, like overly sticky treats and other chewy delights, have been known to cake onto teeth and gums, which will continue to eat away at them as long as they are exposed.
